Few people knew that some of Topo Gigio’s most famous lines weren’t even in the script. Peppino himself made them up! 🥹
The Italian actor Peppino Mazzullo began voicing the beloved little mouse in 1961. For 45 years, he not only portrayed him, but also helped create his personality, improvised his dialogue, and gave him the tenderness that ultimately won over entire generations.
He even came up with his famous Italian expression “But what are you telling me?”. Over time, Topo Gigio appeared on international programs such as The Ed Sullivan Show, while Peppino continued to build his career in theater and television.

The most moving part is that just a few days before turning 100, he gave an interview to Radio Taormina in which he still spoke about the character with so much affection. For him, Topo Gigio had been much more than a job: it allowed him to show a part of himself that he might never have discovered otherwise.
On September 30, Peppino passed away at his home in Sicily, just a few months after celebrating his centenary.
And although many never got to know the face of the man behind Topo Gigio, all it takes is remembering the little mouse to understand how many childhoods his voice accompanied. ❤️
