Jonathan McKinsey, a technology executive at The New York Times, was shot dead in the parking lot of a sports complex in California. His in-laws, both 77, were arrested for the crime as he was going through a contentious family dispute and custody battle over his children.

But court documents revealed an even more disturbing history: McKinsey, a transgender man, had alleged that his wife tried to pull out his medical tubes during his transition in 2010. He also accused his mother-in-law of insulting him over his gender identity and assaulting one of his children for wanting to wear dresses.

The dispute with his wife, Candice Jang, also involved mutual allegations of domestic violence. She accused him of abusing one of his children and threatening to kill her; he denied the child abuse charges and pleaded not guilty.

Now, his in-laws face charges including first-degree murder and conspiracy. His cousin said the family is in shock and suspects the crime may have been related to the custody dispute, although authorities have yet to determine the motive.

A family battle that ended in a life lost and three children caught in the middle of a tragedy.
