116 years of history. A name founded in 1910. And all of that could disappear because of a New Zealand defender and an Argentine streamer. 😂

Club Deportivo Tricolor Municipal de Paine, which competes in Chile’s Tercera División B — the lowest tier of organized football — launched the craziest campaign in amateur football: if they reach 2 million followers on Instagram, they will change their name to ‘Tricolor de Payne’ in honor of Tim Payne, the Wellington Phoenix footballer who went from 4,000 to 5.9 million followers thanks to the influencer ‘El Scarso’. President Martín Nilo and Community Manager Ignacio Hinojosa even posted a photo of Payne holding a watermelon — the area’s emblematic fruit — wearing the club’s jersey. Scarso himself reacted publicly, calling it “madness”.

But behind the joke there is a harsh reality: the club has no TV rights, does not pay formal salaries, and survives by selling at the stadium’s pergola. In just a few days they went from 7,000 to almost 100,000 followers. Will they make it to 2 million? ⚽🔥
