The tension began after the U.S. president accused the pope of putting Catholics at risk due to his alleged softness toward Iran’s nuclear program. In response, Leo XIV defended the Church’s long-standing opposition to nuclear weapons and made his position crystal clear.
“The mission of the Church is to preach the Gospel and peace. If someone wants to criticize me for preaching the Gospel, let them do it with the truth,” he told a group of journalists.
He also reminded reporters that the Catholic Church “has opposed all nuclear weapons for years, and there is absolutely no doubt about that.” 👀
