Maddox Larger had only gone fishing with his brother Grant.

On Monday, October 12, out of the corner of his eye, he saw a stroller slide down an embankment and into a retention pond in Carmel, Indiana. He dropped his fishing rod and ran. Maddox is 15; Grant is 14. In the water, a grandmother was struggling to stay afloat with her 4-year-old grandson strapped to her back. Neither of them knew how to swim.

The brothers jumped in and, together, brought them to shore. But the youngest was still missing: the 2-year-old boy was still inside the stroller, which had become partially submerged. Maddox pulled him out of the water, unbuckled him, and began patting him on the back. According to Fox59, the little boy was face down and wasn’t breathing. Then he coughed up water and started breathing again.

By the time emergency crews arrived, both children were conscious. Carmel police said their actions undoubtedly saved the 2-year-old boy’s life. Grant, however, summed it up this way: “I think anyone else would have done the same”.
