Two monkeys appeared among the rocks of Kuta, on the Indonesian island of Lombok, and started playing with some glass bottles. One of them brought one to its mouth as if it were the most natural thing in the world. Traveler Claire Hansen recorded it all, never imagining that those images would travel around the world.
It is not known for certain what was inside those bottles or whether they actually drank anything. What is clear, however, is where they came from: from the trash someone left behind on a tourist beach. For us, it is just an empty container. For them, it is part of their daily environment.
The video made many people laugh, but it also raised an alarm. Because the real problem is not that two monkeys found some bottles to play with — it is that we still fail to take our trash with us when we leave.
