In Uganda, footballer Collan Rwothovoyo, from the club Nantabulirwa One Sports Club, was chosen as the player of the match and received a yogurt and a loaf of sliced bread as a prize for his performance.
The image surprised thousands of people because it contrasted completely with the luxurious trophies and cash prizes usually seen in European football.
“In my country, food is unfortunately a luxury. What better way for my effort to be rewarded than with food. I will share this bread with my mother and my siblings tonight. Thank you very much”.
The moment sparked all kinds of reactions. While some users mocked the unusual recognition, others pointed out that it reflects the economic reality of many modest teams in African football.
