US$45 for a waffle. That is the price that turned DaBaby’s new restaurant, No Knife Chicken & Waffles, into a topic of conversation on social media after its opening in Charlotte, North Carolina.

The dish that drew the most attention is the “Soulfood Cornbread Waffle”, with collard greens, candied sweet potatoes, and mac & cheese, for US$45. And that’s without chicken: adding six wings costs another US$10. Other flavors cost US$25, and even a bottle of water appears on the menu for US$6.

The controversy erupted when a customer shared a photo of her plate with the caption: “US$45, damn dollars”. The post went viral and sparked a debate between those who consider the prices excessive and those who insist they are not that different from those at other restaurants in major cities.
