An IUD appeared next to a newborn’s head. Cadesia Foster, a mother from Birmingham, Alabama, posted a photo on Facebook of the baby with the device tangled in its hair. The image came from a personal post and, according to LA NACION, was shared by more than 40,000 users.

Then came the question: How did it end up there? Specialists cited by the outlet suggested that the IUD may have become lodged between the uterus and the membranes and come into contact with the baby when they ruptured during delivery. That explanation is a possibility, not a certainty about the circumstances of the birth.

The hypothesis places the contact at the time of delivery. In the photo, the device was caught between the newborn’s locks.
