Valeria Márquez was 23 years old and was livestreaming from her beauty salon in Zapopan, Jalisco, when a man posed as a delivery driver. He asked her “Are you Valeria?” and shot her in the head and chest. Everything was recorded, with thousands of people watching the attack in real time, unable to do anything.
More than a year later, Mexican authorities arrested Ramón Ángel Álvarez Ayala, known as “El R-1”, leader of the criminal group Los Rs and linked to the Jalisco New Generation Cartel. According to Security Secretary Omar García Harfuch, Valeria had been in a relationship with Francisco, Álvarez Ayala’s son, and it was he who asked his father to organize the crime after the breakup.
Francisco remains at large. His father is also identified as the alleged person responsible for financing the murder of Uruapan mayor Carlos Manzo, which occurred months later. During the arrest operation, his bodyguard confronted federal forces, and one of the attackers died in the confrontation.
