A crocodile handler ended up in a terrifying scene in front of visitors to a park in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea.
The man was conducting a feeding demonstration when he approached the animal with a chicken. Suddenly, the crocodile lunged at him, clamped its jaws around his legs and began dragging him toward the water.
The footage shows the worker desperately clinging to the edge of the pond while several people tried to help him from outside. One of the witnesses even used a stick to try to make the animal let go of him.
But the crocodile kept the man trapped for more than an hour.
According to witnesses, he was suffering extreme pain and could barely speak. One of the few phrases he managed to say during the attack was: “I haven’t done anything wrong”.
Finally, police arrived at the scene and shot the crocodile so they could free the handler. The man was rushed to a hospital, but his injuries were too severe. He had worked at the park for approximately two years and died the following day.
The park temporarily closed after the tragedy.
What now raises even more questions is earlier footage from the site, in which workers appeared to be interacting at very close range with the enormous reptiles during other demonstrations.
An activity designed to show visitors how these animals behave ended up becoming a tragedy before their very eyes.
