“I killed him, I’m going to jail”, said the driver of a bus in Chiguayante, Biobío Region, minutes after running over a pedestrian. The phrase, almost an advance confession, ended up being more accurate than he himself imagined.
The incident occurred on the afternoon of August 1, but the individual was not formally charged until this Tuesday the 4th. Police investigations confirmed what his own words suggested: he was driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs at the time of the impact.
The Chiguayante Guarantee Court did not hesitate. It ordered pretrial detention as the investigation moves forward and must establish exactly how an ordinary afternoon ended with a life lost and a sentence that the driver himself seemed to announce.
