Leaning on a staircase railing, a mother proudly watched her daughter’s husband cook, a task that had fallen to the women in the family throughout her life.
Her daughter said she grew up in a family where “men don’t cook”, which is quite the opposite in her partner’s family. So for her mom, watching him prepare food meant something more: her daughter could share a responsibility she had carried alone.
The cycle was broken in an everyday gesture. Her daughter didn’t have to do everything: there was someone willing to share that task, as it should always be.
