Journalists are often accustomed to reporting tragedies, but some news hits in a completely different way. That happened in Los Angeles, when Robert Kovacik, an experienced NBC4 reporter, had to cover live the accident that claimed the lives of two of his own colleagues.
The NewsChopper 4 helicopter crashed on Tuesday night in the Chatsworth area while covering another accident in which a bus had collided with a vehicle. On board were journalist and aerial photojournalist Eliana Moreno and pilot George Marciniw, who died along with a third person who was on the ground.
Kovacik was at the scene when he began reporting on what had happened. However, the coverage became especially painful when it was confirmed that the helicopter belonged to the station itself and that the crew had lost contact with their colleagues.
Visibly affected, the journalist tried to continue speaking in front of the cameras, but the tears and emotion eventually interrupted his report. In the studio, the presenters also struggled to hold back their tears as they delivered the news.
Moreno had worked as an aerial journalist for years and had covered fires, police pursuits, and other emergencies. Marciniw, for his part, was an experienced pilot who had logged thousands of flight hours. The two had frequently worked together since 2023.
The scene moved many viewers because it showed the most human side of journalism: behind every news report are people who also feel, lose friends, and must try to report even when the news breaks their hearts.
The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
