Danly Serrano wasn’t expecting anything when he walked into a bakery in Manila.
He was turning 21 and had decided to treat himself to a chocolate chiffon cake. For the inscription, he asked them to write three words: “Me, Myself, and I”. Me, myself, and I. The two employees serving him asked who the cake was for, and he answered without hesitation: for me.
Then something no one had planned happened. One of them lit a candle, the other held the cake up in front of him, and the two started singing “Happy Birthday” right there, across the counter. Danly burst into tears. They told him to make a wish, and one of the workers, her voice on the verge of breaking, said to him: “Please don’t cry, or we’re going to cry too. Someone get a tissue”.
Afterward, Danly said that the gesture made his birthday much more memorable than it would have been. The video reached thousands of people and ended up on People’s social media page. Sometimes, the best gift isn’t in the box: it’s someone deciding not to let you celebrate alone.
