The complex and painful immigration situation on the border between the Dominican Republic and Haiti has added a new episode filled with drama and tension, after a young Haitian woman made the decision to jump into a river to escape.
Fortunately, after moments of great uncertainty, it was reported that the woman was rescued by the same police officers with the help of a citizen. However, the video has sparked a fierce and polarized debate on digital platforms:
One side cries out in outrage over the “inhumane persecution” and the desperation to which migrants are subjected, risking their lives rather than returning to the crisis devastating Haiti.
The other side defends the right of the Dominican State to enforce its immigration laws and regularize the situation within its territory, arguing that the operations are necessary to maintain order and security.
