Mkuseli Apleni, former director-general of South Africa’s Ministry of Home Affairs, starred in one of the most unusual and viral moments in recent politics during a tense corruption hearing. Visibly nervous, Apleni took a piece of paper to wipe the sweat from his forehead, and unintentionally ended up with the paper stuck to his face in front of the cameras and everyone present.
The moment was captured on video and became a worldwide trend within hours, generating all kinds of reactions that mixed humor with astonishment, and that many interpreted as the perfect metaphor for what it means to be “exposed”.
