A young man in Medellín, Colombia, approached a group of Indigenous women who were asking for money on the street. Several were carrying their babies in colorful cloths, asking for any kind of help to survive the day. He took something out of his pocket and handed it to them one by one: it was not money, food, or diapers. They were condoms.
The scene was recorded and quickly spread. The women, bewildered, barely had time to react on camera as they held their children with one hand and the yellow package in the other.
The video quickly sparked a clash of opinions: for many, it was a lack of respect disguised as a viral gesture; for others, a crude way of pointing to a deeper problem concerning the vulnerability of these families.
The truth is that none of those women asked for that. And the question left hanging on social media was whether anyone had really thought about them before recording.
