No one had warned them what was going to happen in their hearts.
The kittens came from the Meowdog Animal Rescue shelter, still in foster care and waiting for a family. Someone had the idea of taking them to visit a nursing home, thinking it would be an ordinary afternoon of companionship. It wasn’t.
As soon as they were placed in the residents’ arms, something shifted. A gray-haired woman furrowed her brow, trying to hide what she was feeling, while a kitten stretched its little paw toward her face, as if asking permission to stay. She didn’t need to say anything: her expression already said it all. Other seniors smiled, stroked them, and whispered things that only they and the cats understood.
Sometimes affection needs no introductions. Just a small, warm being to remind someone older that they can still care for someone, and that they can still be loved.
