He thought it was just a simple dental infection, something that could be cured with antibiotics and that was it.
It wasn’t.
When the dental team examined his mouth, they found something moving inside his gums: live fly larvae feeding on the tissue.
Doctors call it oral myiasis, a condition that begins when a fly lays eggs in oral wounds that never healed properly. Those eggs become larvae, the larvae grow, and the process can become fatal if it is not treated in time.
Cases like this have been documented since 2017, almost always in patients with extremely poor oral hygiene, advanced neurological diseases, severe addictions, or who are experiencing homelessness.
Treatment exists: deep cleaning to remove every larva and antiparasitic drugs such as ivermectin.
But reaching this point means the body went weeks, perhaps months, without anyone examining that mouth.
