A striking image is showing the force of the earthquake that shook Colombia this Monday.
The Church of San José, in Pereira, Risaralda, was affected during the earthquake, and the images show part of its structure visibly shifted.
The church, also known as the Church of San José or Nuestra Señora del Carmen, is one of Pereira’s most recognized religious buildings and stands out for its Neo-Gothic architecture and large stained-glass windows.
But this is not the first time the church has faced the force of an earthquake. The church had already suffered damage in previous tremors. Historical records indicate that in the 1962 earthquake it lost its central tower, while other subsequent movements also caused damage that required restoration work.
Now, a new seismic event once again puts to the test a structure that has survived the movements of the earth for decades.
The image alone makes it possible to grasp something that is often difficult to imagine: even enormous and seemingly solid structures can move when the ground begins to shake with sufficient intensity.
