A newborn baby kangaroo weighs the same as a bean. It is blind, deaf, and does not have a single hair on its body. This is how Kalin, a baby kangaroo at Animal EDventure Park & Safari in Boynton Beach, Florida, arrived, when park staff carefully opened its mother’s pouch and filmed what almost no one has seen on video.
Inside, there is no scene like the one many imagine: there are walls of pink skin that stretch and adjust like a second womb. There, supported by muscles and ligaments that the mother can tighten to protect it, the baby spends a full eight months feeding, growing its fur, and gaining the strength it will need to venture into the outside world.
A kangaroo’s pregnancy lasts only 33 days. Everything else, the real growth, happens afterward, hidden inside that pouch that nature designed as a silent refuge.
