Emma Edwards was only 10 years old when she received news that would forever change her family’s life. After more than a year of medical treatments for acute lymphoblastic leukemia, doctors informed her parents that there were no longer any options capable of stopping the disease’s progression and that she had only a few days left to live.
While many children dream of traveling to Disney or meeting their idols, Emma had a very different wish: she wanted to marry her best friend and childhood boyfriend, Daniel “DJ” Williams. The two had spent two years saying that one day they would be husband and wife, and had even tried to “get married” during recess when they were eight years old.
Upon learning of her final wish, family members, friends, and neighbors organized a symbolic ceremony in less than two days. Everything was donated: the venue, the decorations, the food, and even the dress. Nearly a hundred people attended to be with Emma on one of the happiest days of her life. Her father walked her down the aisle, and one of her teachers told how the love story between the two children had begun.
Twelve days after that emotional ceremony, Emma passed away surrounded by her family. Her story went around the world because it reminded people that, even in the most painful moments, a gesture of love can become an eternal memory for those who remain.
