The baby goat did not have horns, but that did not matter to it.
It lowered its head as it had seen the adults in its pen do, ready for its first practice headbutt, and headed straight toward the cat standing beside it. It did not judge the distance or the force very well — it barely brushed its forehead against the feline’s back, again and again, insistently, like someone practicing a new movement.
The cat, which could have moved away or hissed, stayed still. It closed its eyes and let the baby goat repeat the gesture, as if, instead of receiving headbutting practice, it were being cuddled. No one had explained to either of them that they were playing different games, and perhaps that is why it ended up being the sweetest thing of all.
