A man who was allegedly trying to escape after a robbery ended up starring in an bizarre scene in Masaya, Nicaragua: he fell to the bottom of a latrine approximately 8 meters deep, where he became trapped among the waste and had to call for help to get out.
The man was identified as Adonis José Calderón Bonilla, 24. According to information reported by local media, he allegedly tried to escape during a pursuit related to the suspected theft of several household appliances.
But his attempt to find a hiding place ended in the worst possible way. Instead of disappearing from the view of those pursuing him, he became immobilized at the bottom of the sanitation structure, completely covered in mud and excrement.
Unable to get out on his own and fearing that he would remain trapped there, he began calling for help. Neighbors initially went to the site, and later Bomberos Unidos and the Dirección General de Bomberos took part, managing to extract him from the pit.
After the rescue, he was examined by emergency responders, who determined that he did not need to be taken to a hospital. The man was ultimately taken to a police station and placed in custodial cells while the investigation into the suspected theft continues.
Accounts of the exact location of the incident differ somewhat: one places it in a latrine in the Andrés Vega Bolaños neighborhood, while another locates it in the La Comarquita, Sacuanjoche neighborhood area. What is consistent is that the man ended up trapped several meters underground and had to be rescued.
So far, authorities have not publicly disclosed all the details of the suspected theft or whether formal charges will be filed.
For now, the only thing certain is that what appeared to be his hiding place ended up becoming an eight-meter-deep trap from which he could not escape without help.
