It was headed for the Turkish port of Tasucu with 267 people on board when, according to the account of witnesses gathered by CNN, it attempted to turn and something broke: the bow began taking on water, and the catamaran ended up splitting in two, about six kilometers off the northern coast of Cyprus.
Ünal Üstel, prime minister of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, confirmed what everyone feared: “there are fatalities”, he said, without specifying how many.
The mayor of Kyrenia, Murat Senkul, reported that so far they had managed to locate 159 people among the passengers.
The Coast Guard, the Express vessel operated by the Akgünler shipping company, civilian vessels, police and ambulances continue working against the clock in the waters where the vessel belonging to Filo Denizcilik sank.
