An image that may be surprising to many people is showing something that normally remains completely out of our sight: the real appearance of a human uterus observed directly inside the body.
The video, which has already accumulated more than 2,6 million views, shows a laparoscopy performed by Dr. Caroline Tirtajasa, a fertility and laparoscopy specialist.
Unlike a medical photograph or an anatomical illustration, here we are not looking at a drawing or a recreation: a small camera makes it possible to directly observe the organs inside the pelvic cavity.
The procedure shows a uterus with a normal appearance, accompanied by its two fallopian tubes and the ovaries, one on each side.
Laparoscopy is a minimally invasive surgical technique in which a camera, known as a laparoscope, is inserted through small incisions in the abdomen. This allows doctors to observe internal structures in great detail and perform certain procedures without the need for a large abdominal incision.
The image also helps explain the position of the uterus within the pelvis. The bladder is located in front, while intestinal structures are behind it and, lower down, is the so-called pouch of Douglas or Cavum Douglas, an area located at the lowest point of the female pelvic cavity when a person is standing.
Dr. Tirtajasa specifically highlights one of the major advantages of laparoscopy: the camera makes it possible to magnify and visualize very small structures with a degree of precision that would be difficult to achieve by observing them directly during conventional surgery.
Although the image may seem strange or even shocking to millions of people, to specialists it represents something much more routine: an opportunity to observe the female reproductive anatomy directly and confirm that its different structures appear normal.
The video went viral because it shows something that almost no one has the opportunity to observe: not how we think a uterus looks according to anatomy books, but how it actually looks inside the human body.
