They weren’t eligible to compete, but no one had to know.
That’s what the owners of three Huskies thought when they dressed them in yellow outfits and cardboard signs to infiltrate Colorado’s biggest gathering of Golden Retrievers. The signs read “Don’t be suspicious”, “Golden on the inside”, and “Identity crisis”. The plan lasted exactly two seconds: their ice-blue eyes and pointed ears gave them away to hundreds of genuine Goldens.
What followed wasn’t in the script. No one removed them from the event. On the contrary, they became the center of attention: they posed for photos, received pets from strangers, and were even given pup cups as if they were part of the family. “I only see three good puppies”, commented one spectator who saw them pass by.
The disguise was the excuse. What made them part of the group was something else: that clumsy, genuine joy that doesn’t distinguish between breeds.
