Then she started recording. In the video, the trans customer claims that the staff behind the counter were laughing and staring at her, and that this made her feel “very uncomfortable”.
With the camera rolling, she announces that she does not intend to pay the bill and asks an employee whether they are going to call the police. The response is calm: no, no one will call anyone. And she lets her leave without paying a single dollar.
The problem is that the footage does not confirm what she alleges. Nothing in the video shows the staff making fun of her, and that ambiguity split social media in two: those who believe her discomfort was real and deserved respect, and those who believe she ate for free by using an accusation that no one can prove.
Meanwhile, the employee did not raise her voice even once.
