Brandy was 17 and Cassidy was 16 when they first heard the word cancer applied to their own mother.
It was not the last time. Over the years, they watched their grandmothers, their sister Wren, and finally Lacey fall ill. When it was time to undergo genetic testing, only Cassidy, 27, tested positive for the BRCA mutation. Brandy, 28, tested negative. Even so, neither wanted to take the risk: they decided to have surgery together, on the same day, even though the doctors were hesitant to approve the surgery for the one who did not have the gene.
“I’m not going to do this alone, you have to do it with me”, Cassidy told her sister. They spent the recovery week in the same bed, even though Brandy has a house that can accommodate four. Today, from the United States, they share their story on TikTok with other women who are unsure whether to act before it’s too late. “We managed to beat the disease before it could take our lives”, says Brandy.
