Jonathan Josué Burgos Sánchez had a clear task: search for survivors among the ruins left by the earthquake in Residencias Vallarta, La Guaira state, Venezuela. Instead, a camera caught him doing something completely different.

The video shows him taking cash dollars inside a damaged home, while entire families waited for news of their loved ones or tried to save the little they had left. Burgos Sánchez was an investigator with the Cicpc, the institution in charge of rescue and security efforts in the area. His uniform was supposed to represent help. That day it represented exactly the opposite.

The Cicpc did not take long to react: it fired him and was blunt in stating that it will not tolerate police misconduct or acts of corruption that undermine the institution’s honor, much less the pain of the victims of an emergency. The question that remains hanging is simple: how many times does this happen and no one records it? 😡
