Allisson Valdez, a Guatemalan influencer, is receiving criticism after sharing a video in which she says, laughing and smiling, that she was in Colombia when the powerful earthquake occurred.
The creator recounted that she managed to escape unharmed and described what happened as a situation in which, in her words, she was very lucky. But it was precisely the way she chose to tell the experience that sparked a wave of questions on social media.
“And what is she laughing about?”, wrote one user. Another commented: “It is sad news. I don’t know why she delivers the news happily”.
The reaction intensified even more after the influencer accompanied her account with the phrase “God and His perfect plans”.
For some, the phrase can be understood simply as a personal expression of gratitude for having survived. For others, it was especially unfortunate amid a tragedy in which other people were not as lucky.
And that is precisely the debate: is it wrong to celebrate having survived a tragedy, or is there a more respectful way to talk about it when other people lost their lives?
The controversy is not necessarily that the influencer is grateful to have made it out alive. The question lies in the contrast between her cheerful tone and the context of a tragedy that affected thousands of people.
On social media, once again, the line between sharing a personal experience and taking advantage of a tragic event to generate content ended up becoming a topic of discussion.
