A woman identified as Fabiana Rosa, 35, suffered an unusual accident on May 31 in the Maracanã neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, when she was walking along Oto de Alencar Street and, while distracted looking at her cellphone, stepped on a manhole cover that was improperly placed.
The structure suddenly gave way and caused her to fall several meters into the duct, while the cover itself struck her on the head. Security cameras captured the moment and revealed that hours earlier two men had handled the same cover, allegedly in an attempted theft.
Neighbors and the motorcyclist who had dropped her off at the location helped her until firefighters arrived. Rosa was taken to Andaraí Federal Hospital with moderate injuries and, after receiving medical attention, was discharged.
