Mangayamma Yaramati waited 57 years to hear the word “mom.”
She married in 1962 in Andhra Pradesh, India, and for more than five decades, pregnancy never came.
She had already gone through menopause 25 years earlier when she and her husband, Sitarama Raja Rao, decided to try in vitro fertilization using a donated egg and his sperm.
On September 5, 2019, at the age of 74, Mangayamma gave birth by C-section to two healthy twin girls, surpassing the record held by Daljinder Kaur, who had become a mother at 72.
Dr. Uma Sankar, who led the medical team, confirmed that the mother and babies were doing well.
But the happiness lasted barely a day: Sitarama suffered a sudden stroke and ended up hospitalized hours after the delivery.
Months later, reports circulated, never confirmed by the hospital or the family, that Mangayamma herself had died of a heart attack.
The case continues to divide doctors and specialists over the limits of science in the face of the desire to become a mother.
