The eruption of Mount Dukono in Indonesia came as no surprise to anyone in the region; the volcano had spent a month showing intensified activity with dozens of daily explosions, and authorities had banned access to its slopes for safety reasons.

But a group of tourists decided that the rules did not apply to them and entered the restricted area in search of thrills and content for their social media.

Fate dealt them a cruel blow: an explosion from the volcano struck the hikers, and the toll was three confirmed dead, two foreigners and a local resident, and at least ten missing, including nine tourists from Singapore.

A video shows a tour guide screaming in desperation while trying to descend with some hikers who were not so close to the crater, and his words were recorded as a testimony of the horror: “Oh, the rocks are falling! Oh my God, it killed them! Oh my God, they have died!”
