Demon Hunter has existed since 2000. 🎸
It is a Christian metal band founded in Seattle by brothers Don and Ryan Clark, with more than 25 years of albums and tours under its belt. They never imagined that their name would end up being confused with the most-watched animated film in Netflix history.
A father in Albany, New York, wanted to take his 5- and 6-year-old daughters to something related to “Kpop Demon Hunters”. He ended up paying nearly US$500 for tickets to a Christian metal concert without realizing the mistake until it was too late. He wasn’t the only one: even a television producer contacted the band thinking it had something to do with the film.
Now Demon Hunter has sued Netflix, Netflix Studios, and promoter AEG Presents in federal court in California.
They compare the situation to someone launching “Kpop Metallica” or “Kpop U2”. They are asking the platform to stop using the name in music, merchandise, and the world tour it is planning for 2027. Netflix has already responded that it will defend itself.
