Ke Huy Quan was just 12 years old when he appeared in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. A year later, he became Data, one of the memorable protagonists of The Goonies. It seemed that his future in Hollywood was assured, but reality turned out to be very different.
As time went by, opportunities began to disappear. Roles for Asian actors were scarce, and Quan eventually stepped away from acting. For years, he worked behind the scenes as an action sequence coordinator and assistant director. His dream of acting seemed to be getting farther and farther away.
But in 2022, he received an opportunity that would change his life: playing Waymond Wang in Everything Everywhere All at Once. The film became a phenomenon, and his performance once again put him at the center of the conversation.
In 2023, at 51 years old, Quan won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. When he took the stage, he was not only celebrating an award: he was also remembering that there had been a time when he thought his dream was over.
“My journey began on a boat. I spent a year in a refugee camp and, somehow, ended up here”, he said during his speech.
