Gunnar was only 7 weeks old when he was left alone in an area of De Doorns, South Africa. His mother and siblings had already been rescued, but no one saw him in time. He spent an entire week without food or shelter, carrying a piece of bread almost as big as his own body from place to place.
When Rachael Sylvester, from the organization Sidewalk Specials, finally found him, the puppy neither ran nor hid. He offered her the bread. “He had spent a week alone, but he still wanted to share his bread with us”, she recalled. He was anemic, had an eye infection, tick fever and a severe parasite infestation.
He received intensive veterinary care and spent time in a foster home before finding Freya, who adopted him for good. Today, Gunnar is a healthy, playful dog who roams the garden looking for stones—not to keep them, but to give them to his family, one by one.
