Tira was born different.
In 2019, in Kenya’s Masai Mara National Reserve, a local guide named Anthony found her among the herd and gave her his own name. She did not have the black-and-white stripes you imagine when you think of a zebra. Her coat was dark, speckled with white spots as if someone had painted her with polka dots. Photographer Frank Liu photographed her that same year, and those images captured the world’s attention.
Biologist Brenda Larison, from the University of California, explained that it is a case of pseudomelanism: a genetic alteration that disrupts the mechanism that creates the stripes without completely erasing the pattern. Similar cases have been seen in Botswana, but they remain extremely rare.
The most tender and also the most fragile thing about Tira is that her unique coloring makes her more visible to predators. Each photo of her is a small miracle that survived one more day on the savanna. 🦓💛
