Leon Segura was just passing by.
He saw the fire devouring a house in Fort Worth, Texas, and heard something that changed everything: the screams of girls trapped inside. He first tried kicking in the front door, but the heat pushed him back. He didn’t give up. He went around the house, found a glass door at the back, and broke it with his bare fist. He cut his arm and hand, tied a handkerchief over his mouth to filter the smoke, and went in anyway.
Inside, he found two girls. He carried them out one by one, seconds before firefighters arrived to take control. They were airlifted to burn units in critical condition. According to the Fort Worth Fire Department, seven people lived in the home: two adults and five children. One of them did not survive.
No one asked Leon to stop that afternoon. He did it because he could, because he was there, because there was a moment when he decided that his hands mattered less to him than those two lives.
