So-called “water cremation”, known as alkaline hydrolysis, is a funeral method that uses hot water and an alkaline solution instead of fire. According to the Scottish Government, the process speeds up the decomposition of the body and allows the family to receive the pulverized bone remains, similar to the ashes from a traditional cremation.
The remaining liquid must be managed under the relevant environmental and health authorizations. The technique is promoted as a more sustainable alternative, as it would use less energy and produce fewer emissions than conventional cremation. Scotland approved its regulation and brought it into force on March 2, 2026, although facilities will need to obtain permits before beginning operations.
