Edineia Florgomes, who has cared for abandoned dogs in her neighborhood in Manaus, Brazil, for years, had gone out with her daughter when the skies opened. One of the dogs she fed had given birth weeks earlier in a burrow beneath a brick structure, a shelter that seemed safe until the water began to seep in.
When Florgomes returned, the area was flooded and the seven puppies were still trapped inside. She took a shovel to widen the opening, but it was the mother herself who plunged into the water again and again, emerging each time with a different puppy in her mouth until she rescued all seven. “I jumped and applauded. She got them all out”, Florgomes said, later bathing the entire family and finding them a safe place to live.
