Wayne Rooney recounted one of the most surreal situations he experienced while playing golf with Donald Trump.
The former Manchester United footballer recalled that, during that round, there were snipers hidden among the bushes, others in a boat on the lake, and dozens of security vehicles around the course.
But one thing especially caught his attention: three enormous Escalade vehicles, one of them with a strange box in the back.
Rooney asked what it was for.
According to his account, Trump explained that, if a nuclear attack occurred, he would be placed inside that structure and evacuated by air.
The answer left Rooney even more bewildered. “What about us?”, he asked. Trump’s response, as the former player recalled, was considerably less reassuring: “You’re screwed”.
The story took place during a round at Trump National Golf Club, near Washington, when Rooney was playing for D.C. United. Trump had unexpectedly joined the group, and the level of security turned a simple round of golf into something that seemed straight out of a movie.
Later, Rooney also recalled that there were between 50 and 100 golf carts used by security and that there were even snipers keeping watch from the course.
A round of golf, a mysterious box, and an evacuation plan in the event of a possible nuclear attack: it definitely wasn’t a normal day on the course.
