Kate Winslet is 50 and no longer wants to stay silent.
The Titanic actress has spent decades fighting Hollywood’s beauty standards, but today she feels that fight is slipping out of her hands. “It’s terrifying that someone’s self-esteem depends so much on their appearance”, she confessed to the British newspaper The Times while promoting her directorial debut, Goodbye June.
Winslet named the women she admires for resisting artificial perfection: Helen Mirren, Toni Collette, Andrea Riseborough and Sigourney Weaver, all women who age in front of the camera without hiding a single expression line. She also recalled when she was called “brave” for appearing without makeup and without retouching in the film Lee, and responded with a question that lingered: had anyone ever said that to a man for growing a beard?
For her, there is no heroism in showing yourself exactly as you are. There is only honesty. And in a world obsessed with filters, you can also choose to simply be real.
