Kelly Osbourne is 40 years old and has already lost count of how many times people talked to her about her body before anything else.

At a health summit in Los Angeles, she said it without filtering herself: she had been a drug addict, an alcoholic, a “total disaster”, and even so, nothing marked her as much as the comments about her weight. “We live in a fatphobic world”, she said in front of the attendees. She said that people told her, “you’re so beautiful, why don’t you lose a little weight and then you’ll be perfect?”, as if her body needed an apology.

What hits hardest is what came afterward: gastric sleeve surgery helped her, but it wasn’t magic. It took her a year of therapy before undergoing surgery, and months of finding mental peace before seeing real results. “You have to change your mindset first”, she explained. Today, following the death of her father, Ozzy, she is going through another silent chapter: the concern is no longer about the extra pounds, but about the ones she lost unintentionally.
