“We prayed every day, asking God to turn us into women”: Colombian twins transitioned together and defied criticism and guilt to live as they wanted

Every night, between 7 and 8, before the soap opera started, Emma and Gabriela knelt.

They had a script they knew by heart: asking forgiveness for their mistakes, for not feeling comfortable in their own bodies, for existing the way they did.

They repeated it almost every day for one or two years, convinced that if they prayed enough, God would hear them and turn them into women. Meanwhile, outside their room, school and the street subjected them to bullying, harassment, and violence for not fitting in.

Gabriela says that one day she asked herself a simple question: why did she have to feel guilty if the rest of the world doesn’t feel guilty for being who it is? That question changed everything.

Today, having transitioned, both Colombian women say something that is rarely heard with such calm: they regret nothing.
