Ciro is 8 years old and has just experienced his first major title.
Wearing the Inter Miami Academy’s U-8 jersey, he scored two goals—one from a free kick, with curl and everything—in the Dreams Cup final. The team thrashed Weston FC 10-2, and he took home the MVP award. His teammates had already crowned him earlier, putting sunglasses on him after another goal of his in the tournament, as if he were a star.
Hours later came his first public interview, for the Academy’s official account. They asked him why they had played so well. Ciro, the youngest of the three children of Lionel Messi and Antonela Roccuzzo, didn’t talk about talent or nerves: “Because we passed and listened to the coach”. Not a word about his surname. Just an 8-year-old boy describing what he learned that afternoon on the pitch.
“WE PLAYED WELL BECAUSE WE LISTENED TO THE COACH”.
