The planet gave no one a break this August 14. 🌏
A magnitude 7.7 earthquake shook the island of Flores, in Indonesia, with its epicenter just 62 kilometers from the town of Ende. The sea receded at several beaches, a classic sign of a tsunami, and authorities issued alerts forecasting waves of up to 3 meters.
Hospitals evacuated patients as cracks appeared in the walls. Hours later, the alert was lowered after waves of only 19 to 30 centimeters were confirmed.
But the ground did not stop there: just one hour and six minutes later, a magnitude 5.0 earthquake shook Alhendín, in Granada, Spain, and was felt in Málaga, Córdoba, Cádiz, and Seville.
There were facade collapses in Armilla and more than 80 calls to 112, forcing Andalusia to activate level 1 of its seismic emergency.
All of this comes just weeks after Colombia and Venezuela experienced earthquakes that left thousands affected, reminding the world that the Earth’s crust gives no warning. 😨
