But the reality is that the insect in the photo is 100% real and lives in the tropical forests of Central and South America. It is the Sabethes cyaneus, colloquially known as the “diva mosquito”.
What stands out most are those “paddles” of iridescent scales on its middle legs. They are not just for show; these mosquitoes use them to perform a complex mating dance. They are extremely agile and difficult to catch, which has earned them a reputation for being almost “magical” among entomologists.
Like other mosquitoes, Sabethes is a vector of diseases such as yellow fever in jungle environments.
