What were they doing?: A photographer was stunned after capturing three sea turtles stacked on top of one another in the middle of the ocean

Look closely at the photo. Three sea turtles, one on top of the other, floating in such clear blue water it seems unreal.

The image was taken in Ningaloo, in western Australia, by Argentine photographer Luciano Morales Corinaldesi, known on social media as @luchi.in.the.jungle. He stayed just long enough to capture the scene, which later won gold at the Underwater Awards Australasia 2025.

At first glance, anyone would say there’s a party that got out of control. And yes, it could be something like that. The scene took place during the breeding season, when males may compete for a female and try to mate with her at the same time. That could explain this unusual pile of shells: several males trying to approach the same female in a submarine squeeze where each one fights for its place.

It seems strange, almost comical, but these kinds of interactions are part of sea turtles’ reproductive behavior. And although we don’t know exactly what was happening at that moment, one thing is clear: the photo captured an extraordinarily rare scene.
